I fixed the low volume problem re-downloading the audio driver from the HP website, installing it and rebooting the computer.
This has happened a couple of times, after a Windows 10 upgrade has been installed. After reintalling the driver, the Beats Audio icon reappered on my notification area and the sound was back.
